February is African-American History Month  During National African-American History Month, we celebrate the rich legacy of African-Americans and honor the remarkable contributions they have made to perfecting our Union.  This picture links to enormous information, history and inspiration.  Well worth reading.

"During National African American History Month, we pay tribute to the contributions of past generations and reaffirm our commitment to keeping the American dream alive for the next generation.  In honor of those women and men who paved the way for us, and with great expectations for those to follow, let us continue the righteous cause of making America what it should be -- a Nation that is more just and more equal for all its people.  NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2012 as National African American History Month.  I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities."  President Barack Obama, Jan. 31, 2012  Presidential Proclamation

 WOMEN WARRIOR STORIES

OUR HISTORY IS OUR STRENGTH  Our History is Our Strength pays tribute to the millions of women who helped create a better world for the times in which they lived as well as for future generations.

HER STORY This 17-minute video highlights the stories of nine women Veterans, each from a different era and service.

A
unique group of civilian women, Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP)
worked directly with the Army Air Forces on the home front during World
War II ferrying planes from factories to air bases, testing planes for
mechanical problems, and towing targets for aerial gunnery students to
practice shooting. WASPs performed these dangerous assignments willingly
during the years when male pilots were needed at the front.
Thirty-eight WASP died in the line of duty, one being a
Chinese-American, Hazel (Ying) Lee.

On
Nov. 16, 1942, Cochran established the Women’s Flying Training
Detachment (WFTD) at Howard Hughes Airport in Houston, Texas, with an
initial class of 25 women who were required to have 200 hours flying
time and a commercial license. The mission of the WFTD was to perform
whatever flight duties the Army Air Corps required within the United
States.

Cathay
Williams First black female to enlist in the Army. On Nov. 15, 1866,
Cathay Williams enlisted in the Army using the name William Cathay. She
informed her recruiting officer that she was a 22-year-old cook. He
described her as 5' 9", with
black eyes, black hair and black complexion. An Army surgeon examined
Cathay and determined the recruit was fit for duty, thus sealing her
fate in history as the first documented black woman to enlist in the
Army even though U.S. Army regulations forbade the enlistment of women.

May is Asian-Pacific Heritage Month

More than two million women have served in the US Armed Forces beginning with the American Revolution. May is Asian-Pacific Heritage Month and an opportune time to tell the stories and relive the history of America's military women. The Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation, Inc., continues its national campaign to locate and register women veterans, active duty servicewomen, women serving in the National Guard and Reserves and women who have served in service organizations so that they can be recognized in the Memorial's interactive database—the Register—which places the names, photographs, military histories and memorable experiences of registered servicewomen at the public's fingertips. During Asian-Pacific Heritage Month, why not celebrate women's contributions by registering yourself, a relative, friend or historical figure in the Women's Memorial? If you are, or know of a woman who has served or is currently serving in the military, please call 1-800-4-SALUTE or write the Women's Memorial, Dept. 560, Washington, DC 20042-0560. Internet users can contact the Foundation through e-mail at hq@womensmemorial.org.

November is National American Indian Heritage Month

Army - We are honored to recognize the outstanding contributions American Indians have made to our nation and our Army. Thousands have served in the armed forces from the early days of the Revolutionary War through today. The multitude of cultures across our landscape has helped shape our nation. We recognize their rich heritage and honor their spirit and true devotion to our country. “ Since the birth of America, [American Indians and Alaska Natives] have contributed immeasurably to our country and our heritage, distinguishing themselves as scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders in all aspects of our society. Native Americans have also served in the United States Armed Forces with honor and distinction, defending the security of our Nation with their lives. ”  A Proclamation by President Barack Obama

During National American Indian Heritage Month, I call on all Americans to learn more about the history and heritage of the Native peoples of this great land. Such actions reaffirm our appreciation and respect for their traditions and way of life and can help to preserve an important part of our culture for generations yet to come. President George W. Bush, November 12, 2001 Presidential Proclamation
